The host, seeing that Ximen De had agreed so readily, was overjoyed. He quickly clasped his hands and said, "Mr. Ximen, your generosity is truly rare. This fox-fur coat has been passed down in my family for generations. Since you do not disdain it, I shall present it to you."
Ximen De smiled and said, "One does not accept rewards without deserving them. How can I accept such a generous gift for nothing?" The host replied, "If you would do me the honor, it would give me immense face. However, there is another matter I must ask of you."
The host said, "I recently acquired a piece of brocade with embroidered verses, but I cannot fathom their meaning. I thought that you, sir, as a learned scholar, would surely be able to decipher them."
The host then ordered someone to bring out a piece of brocade, and indeed there were several lines of small characters embroidered on it. Ximen De examined it carefully and then smiled, saying, "This is a palindrome poem, readable in both directions. The poem conceals a hidden meaning, expressing the idea that 'good times do not last long, it is hard to have another such grand feast.'"
Upon hearing this, the host suddenly understood and repeatedly expressed his gratitude. He then ordered a feast to be prepared in honor of the guest. Ximen De could not decline and had to take his seat at the table.
After three rounds of wine, the host brought up the matter of the fur coat again. Ximen De said, "Since I have received such generous favor, it would be impolite to refuse. But I have a word of advice: times are hard now, and people's hearts are unpredictable. Although this fox-fur coat is a treasure, it will attract attention. Better to leave it with you for now, and I will come to retrieve it when I need it."
