Since that day when he parted with He Jianchen at the Amusement Park, Yang Xingyuan had been feeling downcast. One day, as he was reading at home, he suddenly heard someone calling from outside. Upon going out, he saw it was He Jianchen. They entered the house hand in hand. Yang Xingyuan had a servant brew a pot of fine tea, and they sat knee to knee in the study for a heartfelt conversation.
He Jianchen said, "Xingyuan, you've been looking unwell lately. Is something weighing on your mind?" Yang Xingyuan sighed, "Jianchen, as bosom friends, I won't conceal it from you. I don't consider myself a man of romantic inclinations, but since meeting Li Yun, I've felt unsettled and unable to restrain myself." He Jianchen remarked, "Li Yun is indeed innocent and vivacious, but being in the demimonde, it's no permanent arrangement after all." Yang Xingyuan said, "Precisely. Whenever I think of it, I feel disheartened. To live alone in this world, solitary and lonely-what pleasure is there in that?" He Jianchen advised, "You needn't be too pessimistic. In life, what we seek is peace of mind. If you truly have feelings for her, you should make plans early, either to help her buy her freedom or find another way out." Yang Xingyuan shook his head, "Easier said than done! My salary is meager, and I can barely support myself. How could I afford to help her buy her freedom? Moreover, her madam is formidable and probably won't let her go easily."
They talked for a long while, and the tea grew cold. Seeing that it was getting late, He Jianchen stood up to take his leave.
After seeing his guest off, Yang Xingyuan returned to sip tea alone by the window. Outside, the moonlight was hazy, and bamboo shadows swayed. Unconsciously, the thought of harmonious union came to his mind, and he envied those loving couples who could attain such a bond.
Just as he was lost in thought, the telephone suddenly rang. Yang Xingyuan answered it. It was the newspaper office, pressing him for a manuscript. He had to collect himself and hurry off to attend to the matter.
